Effigy Mounds Handbook
Established in 1949, Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeast Iowa covers 2,526 acres in the upper Mississippi River region. The mounds at the core of Effigy Mounds National Monument are a collection of prehistoric indigenous earthworks built in the shape of bears, turtles, and other animals. These effigy mounds were built by the Woodland period peoples, between 1000 BCE and 1500 CE, and were a part of various ceremonial, religious, and burial traditions. Throughout the monument, visitors can view 191 of these earthworks, the largest-known concentration remaining in the United States.
